The Art of Belonging: Why Great Experiences Begin with People

We remember how a place made us feel long after we forget what it looked like.

A circle of diverse people looking inward and smiling, seen from below.

That feeling almost always comes down to a single question: did I belong here?

Belonging is quietly at the centre of everything I do — in hospitality, in events, and in Odisea. It is not a decorative extra you add once the logistics are handled. It is the logistics. When people feel seen, safe and connected, everything else becomes possible.

Belonging is designed, not left to chance

It is tempting to think that connection “just happens” when you put people in a room. It doesn't. The warmth of a welcome, the pacing of a programme, the small gesture that says we thought about you — these are design decisions. Great experiences are built long before anyone arrives, through intention and attention to detail.

Three foundations of belonging

  • Listening before acting. Understand people before you design for them. What would make them feel comfortable and valued?
  • Consistency. Belonging is built through repeated small signals of care, not one grand gesture.
  • Shared purpose. People connect fastest when they are part of something larger than themselves.

From hospitality to community

Luxury hospitality taught me to anticipate needs before they are spoken. Large-scale events taught me to hold complexity so the experience feels effortless for everyone else. Community wellbeing reminded me that meaningful change always begins with people. Odisea is where those lessons meet.

Belonging is the beginning of transformation.
